Remember that if you have committed to doing your Current Events on a certain day, you must do it on that day. Also, if you are not scheduled yet, you can let me know in the morning if you are ready to present and you can be added to the list. It would be great if more people volunteered for next week! |
Water Polo Pool Lesson #2
28 Comments
Water Polo today was super exciting! It was a great afternoon in the pool. Students demonstrated their swimming skills, then moved into the deep end. Once there, they practised some basic strokes, worked to throw and catch with one hand, and then played a game. On Friday, most of the session will be spent in game play which the students are very excited about. Leave a comment about water polo: What went well for you and what would you like to improve? What are you looking forward to? Please make sure you read your comments as some of you are once again rushing and forgetting the criteria. Check for spelling, grammar and punctuation as well! Check out this video on water polo tricks. Perhaps you will get some ideas for next time!Remember to bring your bathing suit, towel, and water bottle for water polo tomorrow.

Possible topics include: Water, Gas/Oil/Petroleum, Pipelines in B.C., Deforestation, Poverty, Animal Extinction, Threats to animals, War between Ukraine and Russia, ISIS/ISIL, Terrorism, Racism, and Air Pollution. Remember: Tomorrow is a Professional Day. No school for you! Skating Monday! Bring helmet, gloves, skates, etc. We have been focusing on the reading skill 'making inferences in order to deepen understanding' for the past two days. It can be a difficult concept. Read the inference examples below. Similar to yesterday, create two of your own inferences by writing two indication sentences and one inference conclusion as per the examples. Inference: Deriving Conclusions from Indications:
Math: gr. 6 - p. 232 #2-8; Wilson - sheet; Middleton p. 55 # 4,5,7,9. Check out 'Flash Mind Reader'. It's cool! Can you figure out how it works? Think multiplication. Send Mrs. Van a gmail if you figure it out. By the way, it HAUNTED me until I figured it out. It took me a sleep to get it! Watch the density video link that Sugarbear found! Our 'Novel Approach' learning intention for today was, 'I can make inferences when reading in order to deepen my understanding'. Read the inference examples below. Create your own inference by writing two indication sentences and one inference conclusion as per the examples. Then share how inferencing helps you become a better reader. Inference: Deriving Conclusions from Indications:
Math: gr. 6 - p. 55; Wilson p. 55 #5,7; Middleton - none . Science: Mass, Volume, or Density? sheet. Listen to the link ggingersnap found for measuring matter! That Fish That Talked (and others) found this awesome Measuring Matter song! Have a listen...Remember: Ask your parent(s) for glue, scissors, etc. if you don't have supplies. Please ask/beg your parent(s) to drive for water polo on January 28th and 30th! Homework: Language Arts: Today we added another reading strategy to our set of skills: Visualization and Determining What's Important. You are to read for 20 minutes tonight and describe a part in your reading where you practiced visualization and determining what's important. Leave a comment describing how you used these strategies. Give details / be specific about how they help you in your reading. Listen to Christina Aguilera's 'Beautiful' if you like. What do you still have questions about? What are you looking forward to?Today you learned that proficient (good) readers monitor comprehension as they read. Leave a comment of a specific example of how monitoring comprehension has helped you as you have read a difficult text either recently or in the past. Homework: Many of you realized today how knowing your times tables can help you convert mixed fractions to improper fractions. Play Math Man Multiplication to help increase your multiplication recall speed. Pattern Block Math with the Minis!Today we completed the next 'Novel Approach' lesson. The focus was on using background knowledge and making connections. Leave a comment of a specific example of how using setting a purpose, using background knowledge, or making connections has helped you in your reading comprehension in the past week.
Remember: Return skating and water polo permission as soon as possible. Please let your parents know that we need drivers for these evernts, or we won't be able to go. Leave a comment about today's Science lesson. How might you measure air? Find an interesting Youtube link about measuring matter. Post it with your response.
Today we started 'A Novel Approach'. Mrs. Jensen modelled 'Visible Thinking' with the poem 'Poetry'. She recorded her thinking about the poem e.g. ideas about the meaning of the poem and questions she had. Then you had a chance to show your 'Visible Thinking' with the lyrics to Green Day's song 'Time of Your Life'. You found many poetic devices, since they are fresh in your mind from our poetry unit. Many of you also came up with some very deep-thinking ideas about the meaning of the lyrics. Leave a DETAILED comment about your thoughts on today's lesson. You may want to listen to 'Time of Your Life' again. What a great song!
You used logical reasoning to complete the 'Build It' shapes. |
